4/02 – 25/02 Εργαστήριο Comicsκαι αφήγησης για παιδιά σχολικής ηλικίας από την Comicdom Press
«Γράφοντας με εικόνες»

Το εργαστήριο αποτελείται από τέσσερειςαυτοτελείς ενότητες, κατά τη διάρκεια των οποίων τα παιδιά εισάγονται στηνέννοια της αφήγησης και στην τέχνη των comics και μαθαίνουν να δημιουργούνμικρές ή μεγαλύτερες ιστορίες χρησιμοποιώντας τη “γραμματική” και το“συντακτικό” της 9ης τέχνης. Η κάθε ενότητα λειτουργεί ως αυτόνομο εργαστήριο,αλλά και οι τέσσερεις μαζί συνθέτουν έναν ολοκληρωμένο κύκλο μαθημάτων.

Πιο συγκεκριμένα, οι ενότητες είναι:

Ενότητα 1η: Εισαγωγή στην έννοια τηςαφήγησης και στην τέχνη των comics Στην ενότητα αυτή καλούμε τα παιδιά ναγνωρίσουν τα βασικά χαρακτηριστικά της αφήγησης και των comics. Τι σημαίνειεικονογραφημένη αφήγηση; Ποια η διαφορά των comics από την εικονογράφηση και τηζωγραφική; Πώς συνδυάζεται ο λόγος καιεικόνα στην τέχνη των comics; Τι σημαίνει αρχή-μέση και τέλος μιας ιστορία;Ποια είναι τα βασικά συστατικά που χρειάζεται κανείς για να κάνει μια ιστορίαcomics; Στη συνέχεια ενθαρρύνουμετα παιδιά, μέσα από παιχνίδια και δημιουργικές ασκήσεις να εφαρμόσουν αυτά πουέμαθαν.

Ενότητα 2η: Φτιάχνοντας μια μικρή ιστορία:εισαγωγή στα comic strips Η δεύτερη ενότητα εισάγει τα παιδιά στηνέννοια της δράσης σε μια αφήγηση.Με αφορμή κλασσικά comic strips (Peanuts,Garfield κλπ) μαθαίνουν πώς να δημιουργούν σύντομες ιστορίες με αρχή, μέση καιτέλος. Πώς κατανέμουμε τη δράση στα καρέ; Πώς χρησιμοποιούμε τα σύμβολα τωνcomics (μπαλονάκι, εφέ ήχου κλπ); Τι σημαίνει η έννοια της αφαίρεσης στηναφήγηση;

Ενότητα 3η: Δημιουργία χαρακτήρα Κάθε ιστορία γίνεται μοναδική εξαιτίας τωνπρωταγωνιστών της. Σε αυτή την ενότητα μαθαίνουμε πώς πλάθουμε διαφορετικούςχαρακτήρες. Χρησιμοποιώντας δημιουργικά παιχνίδια ερεθίζουμε τη φαντασία τωνπαιδιών προκειμένου να δημιουργήσουν, τόσο αφηγηματικά, όσο και στο χαρτί τοδικό τους χαρακτήρα και στη συνέχεια να τον τοποθετήσουν μέσα σε μια ιστορία.

Ενότητα 4η: Αποδόμηση και δόμηση μιαςσελίδας comic Με αφετηρία μια γνωστή ιστορία/παραμύθι,αποδομούμε την αφηγηματική της δομή και την ξαναχτίζουμε. Πώς επιλέγουμε τα βασικά στοιχεία μιας ιστορίας; Πώςγίνονται οι μεταβάσεις από την κάθε σκηνή; Χρησιμοποιώντας τους κώδικες των comics και τις τεχνικές τηςαφήγησης φτιάχνουμε από την αρχή μια ολοκληρωμένη σελίδα comic.

Our little setup at the Herakleidon Museum.

A late post today, since i should have wrote about the "Christmas Mischief" event last week.
Any-who we had a great ol'time drawing and telling stories about Kalikatzaroi (Greek goblins).

here are some photos from what we and the kids did.

With Christmas just around the corner, me and Vasilia are doing another Comicdom event, this time we are going to be telling stories about Kalikatzaroi (Greek Goblins that only come out at Christmas)

Vasilia will be telling them and i will be drawing them live, just like we did with Sindbad the Sailor but this time on photoshop and projected on the Herakleidon Museum wall.

I went through a lot of concept to finally end up with this Taxi Driver mash-up.

As you can see i was focused on Salim the Taxi Driver and was pondering the idea of his own family run Taxi company for the tribute pic.

But nearing the end i found one of the Taxi Driver's movie posters and it just clicked.

He has just been entered the Guinness book of records as the longest living of its kind, meaning a two-faced animal! so happy 12th birthday Frank & Louie!

Comic Workshops and Sindbad the Sailor storytelling!

This weekend and next Wednesday, i will be doing a Live Comic making of a Sindbad the Sailor story while Vasilia Vaxevani (storyteller of Paramythokores) will be narrating it. A nice little project that was put together by Comicdom Press and the City of Athens Cultural Organization.

So if you are in Athens this Sunday morning or Wednesday Afternoon
come on by to see us, play, paint and create some monsters :)

Next, Starting from October the first i will be teaching a four lesson course on Comics and Storytelling with Vasilia (see above) for elementary level children at the Herakleidon Art Museum.

My postman just popped by and brought to me my copy of the CBLDF Transmetropolitan Artbook that was funded through Kickstarter a few months ago.

i gotta say that i am loving the sliver print on the cover with Spider and the smiley face.

The Long waited package has arrived!

all hail this beautiful box of comics that found its way to me this hot July morning.

After a delightful walk in the 37oC boiling degrees streets of Athens to the post office
i sat down and opened this little box and all i can say is that its contents
have become instant favorites and i plan to read them many times over the next couple of weeks :)

this month at the Public Bookstore in Syntagma square
there are going to be a few workshops about comics.

Lida Tsene, Dimitris Sakaridis, Tomek, Alexia Othonaiou and i will be doing these exotic classes
so if you are in Greece and are interested to learn about the oddities that are comics, then come on by!

Now that the Convention is just around the corner and all last minute jobs are creeping up to attack me, i decided to post about this little mini comic that will be at the end of Swan Songs: Fleeting Feathers.

Its called "The Hunters Burden" and its a 3 page back story about one of the main characters.

Over the next couple of days, i will also post about other Convention related stuff like extras and signing times.

Its a bugger when you dont have a scanner to do the job right but instead you have to take atmospearic photos with sleeping cats in the bg :P

Anyway i'm back in my hometown of Ag.Nikolaos in Crete, where its been about 4 years weirdly enough since my last xmas visit here. All 3 cats are snoozing around me under hot lamps and blankets, cause this house gets pretty cold this time of the year, God i miss my central heating in Athens!

I've been doing some mind clearing the last couple of days, catching up with an old project ive been working on the last year and writing out the next issue of Swan Songs.

Now that i'm here for the holidays, i'll be having my first comic presentation in Ag.Nik this Wednesday in the coffee/book shop i used to hang out and play backgamon in after school oh so many years ago so that should be pretty sweet! if any Cretans are reading this post be sure to pass by and have a drink, maybe pick up a Swan Song or Trinket!

The exhibition will feature 13 comic artist and will be held at the Attikon and Apollon cinemas and also be featured in tomorrows issue of Lifo.

The Bionic Betty Band Poster

Back to Athens after my 3 week stay in Crete and Back to work straight away.

The Bionic Betty Band poster was a fun little poster gig that got canceled at the last moment
and i got stuck with the illustration. It was actually made for a piano bar evening so i went with a 30s-40s feeling but after i got word of the cancellation the diesel punk parts piled up on to it and Bionic Betty was born!

So i cant complain, i had fun with it in the end :)

i plan of printing a very limited run of the poster soon, so stay tuned.

20 Years Later: GOZER

Had a little extra time today so i decided to do the next "Reboot" from my old sketches from when i was 6.
This time its my all time favorite baddie from Ghostbusters! GOZER "Are you a God?" the Gozarian and his two Terror Dogs, Zuul the Gatekeeper and Vince Clortho the Keymaster.

I've got to say, I've had some good times with these guys :) their designs have never been topped or redone. You have never seen anything like these demons anywhere else except in this 1984 movie gem and don't get me started with Gozer's "clothes", what are they made of? crystal? ectoplasm? bubble-bath?? i dunno but its cool as Hell!

20 Years Later: BEBOP

As promised here is the first "Before & After" from my sketchbooks, from when i was 6. We could even call it a Reboot :P since everyone in the movies is doing it these days

and especially after i saw the Mortal Kombat Rebirth teaser last night.

Anywayz i'm starting off with Bebop from the Teenage Mutant (Hero) Turtles, since i probably havent drawn him since then :P (i hope they make another live action Turtles movie, those were Great! but not the third one, that one sucked, the puppets didnt even lip sync right!)

Ghosts From the Past

Been a while since i uploaded something but heres a treat for you :)

Last week my mum brought back from London a few toys, photos and sketchbooks i had when i lived there.
This stuff must be from when i was 6-ish and i couldn't believe it.

thats the juice that made me who i am today :P

Once i find some extra time i am defiantly doing some "before and after" pics of these sketches from 20 years ago, especially the Stay Puff one and one of a Terror Dog getting zapped!

Comicdom Con 2010 Aftermath

Soooo
I am just starting to recover from the weekend.
things are starting to flow normally again, i think i will need an extra couple of days to get fully back on schedule.

i would like to thank everyone who passed by the booth and purchased Trinkets.
i never thought that soooo many people would have wanted a copy.
so again... THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

plus i met a lot of new people, at least i think i did! after running around doing oddjobs and signing, everything was a blur :P
didnt manage to get all the books i wanted, so i think i will have to search the comic-shops especially for fanzines i didnt get at the con.

oh! and guess what? i walked away with 2 awards. (designed by Tomek)
-Best Artist and Best Fanzine (for Snitch & Snatch)
that was a surprise i was not expecting :D so i thank the Comicdom Academy for picking me.

expect photos from the con soon and other bits and bobs!
and some time next week the book shall be in national bookshops

i have updated my shop with some copies of Trinkets and the remaining Group photo prints.
all copies of Trinkets are bilingual in Greek & English.

Trinkets@ Comicdom Con Athens

Wanted to post this earlier but i just got in from a couple of drinks after leaving the books of at the convention.
So here are a few shots of what i will have in store at the Comicdom booth over the next 3 days.

I will have the normal edition (seen above and some prints featuring the main characters of the Trinkets stories)
plus a specially wrapped with love and stars, Hidden in the Attic Edition, that contains:
- the Trinkets book with alternative cover, that belongs to Trink herself
- an actual group photo of the group from way back then
- a Skeleton Breath poster
- and 1 badge to wear on those special occasions.

The 100 people who get one of these Limited editions, will be entered into the special raffle that will take place after the Awards Sunday evening, for the original watercoloured cover of Trinkets. (seen below)

I will be at the Comicdom booth through the next 3 days, signing these books and copies of Snitch & Snatch.

Plus i will be talking at a Panel, Saturday, 13:00, Seven Greek Creators Discuss Comics.

i think thats about it, hope to see familiar faces there and everyone have a great weekend!

Making of: the Wolf Mask

With the release of Trinkets i decided to make the mask from my comic "The Wolves in the Trenches"
This has been something i wanted to do for a loooong time and i had the chance to get into the motion of actually making it.
So be easy on me, this is my first time using clay and paper-mache.

Over the Easter weekend i bought all the things i needed, clay, newspapers, wallpaper glue, acrylic paints, a Minnie Mouse ball, matte varnish ect.

I read some tutorials and followed the steps loosely.
So if anyone wants to read more about paper mache and clay mask, ask "Google, Google on the wall"

Step 1: Paper-mached the Minnie Mouse ball for 3 days, 5 layers.
Step 2: Burst the ball, cut the paper mache ball in half and built the details with paper tape, newspaper and plastic cups, then paper-mache'd another layer on top.

Step 3: once dry i added a layer of clay all over and added more details.
Step 4: a couple of days later, once the clay was fully dry i smoothed the mask with sand-paper then started the painting with acrylics.

Step 5: then dirtied and varnished the final and propped on the shelf :)
i think it turned out ok and i hope to get better at this in the future
So expect more masks and clay statues from me, this is only the beginning!
